Civil Partnership
The Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into force on December 5th 2005. The legislation creates a legal relationship of civil partnership, which can now be formed by gay and lesbian couples. It grants same-sex couples the level of treatment equal to that which married heterosexual couples enjoy in a wide range of legal matters, although not in every respect. It is therefore wise to clarify your legal position rather than presume it is the same as a married heterosexual couple. Like marriage, registering as civil partners is a serious commitment not to be undertaken lightly, it is essential to get off to the right start. Couples who decide upon this course would be well advised to consider putting their relationship on a firm legal footing, in order to avoid future problems. Our solicitors can advise on all aspects of Civil Partnerships, from creation to dissolution.
